Supplementary note: 303 is free-machining stainless; 304 / 304L and 316 / 316L are austenitic grades; 17-4PH is precipitation-hardening stainless.
Choosing the Right Stainless Grade
303 — Suitable where easier machining and fine detail are more important than maximum corrosion resistance.
304 / 304L — A widely used general-purpose option for machined components, housings and equipment parts.
316 / 316L — Often selected where stronger corrosion resistance or cleaner surface performance is required.
17-4PH — Used where higher strength is needed and heat-treatment condition becomes part of the machining plan.
Machining & Surface Control
Heat build-up, work hardening and tool wear can quickly affect dimensions and surface quality, so stable cutting conditions and early identification of cosmetic surfaces are important.
Tool & heat management — Tool condition, coolant and chip evacuation are controlled to protect consistency.
Burr & edge quality — Threads, intersecting holes and sharp features receive additional attention.
Cosmetic surfaces — Brushing, polishing or electropolishing works best when machining marks and handling damage are controlled before finishing.
